SUMMARY:Architects in Schools Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:Join us June 22-26\, 2026\, for our annual Architects in Schools Summer Camp! The virtual camp is designed for youth ages 8-12. Register by 5pm PT on June 12 to participate. \nCAMP THEME:\nThis year’s camp theme is Small Changes = BIG IMPACT\, Designing Sustainable and Resilient Communities. What are small things that you can do in your community to make it more sustainable and resilient? Let’s explore together! Camp participants will learn about ways they can use design to support some of our smallest community members – birds and bugs! Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing\, planning\, model making\, and more. By implementing the design process\, they will make small changes in their community that create a BIG impact! \nHOW IT WORKS:\nThe camp is entirely virtual – meaning students can participate from home. To engage in the camp\, participants will need a computer\, tablet\, or other device with access to internet. \nEvery day\, we will email you the digital lesson including hands-on design activities\, reading\, thinking exercises\, and pre-recorded videos. There will also be a live Zoom session every day from 12:30-1:30pm PT. The live sessions are optional but highly recommended so students can meet practicing architects and designers and fully experience the camp content. \nDAILY SCHEDULE: \n\nWork through the Daily Lesson PDF that is emailed to you the evening prior to each day of camp\nWatch the Pre-recorded Videos\nStart on activities in your Student Architect Journal\nJoin us for a Live Zoom Activity from 12:30-1:30pm PT\nGo back to your Student Architect Journal and complete the activities for the day\nComplete the Bonus Challenge if you want to do more!\n\nACCESSING FREE ART SUPPLIES:\nWe will mail art supplies to participants located in Oregon. Boxes of supplies will be $25 for those able to pay\, but will be available at no cost to those who are experiencing financial barriers. Please fill out this supply box request form and select to pay if you are able. See the recommended list of art supplies. Supply requests are due by June 5.  \nCOST:\nWe recommend a participation fee of $25/child. Please choose your payment tier based on your financial resources. No family will be turned away due to inability to pay. \nQUESTIONS?\nIf you have any questions about the camp\, please contact Kim Knowles\, Director of Education Programs at kim@af-oregon.org. \nREGISTER\nRegistration deadline: June 12\, 5pm PT\nSupply requests due by June 5 \nWould you like to connect with students during our daily live Zoom sessions and inspire them through architecture? Sign up to volunteer! \nCamp Sponsor\n \nSupporting Sponsors\n \n

SUMMARY:Meet & Greet: 2026 PAE Scholar\, Brooklynn Roth
DESCRIPTION:Join AFO and PAE at a virtual celebration for our 2026 PAE Scholar\, Brooklynn Roth.\nSpend your Wednesday lunch hour meeting Brooklynn and learning more about the annual $5\,000 PAE Diversity in Engineering Scholarship! \nBrooklynn Roth (she/her) is a Civil Engineering student at George Fox University\, passionate about creating more connected\, sustainable\, and equitable communities. She believes that transit infrastructure has the power to shape opportunity and hopes to design transportation systems that reduce dependence on cars. \nThrough her studies she is exploring how public transit\, including railways and safer bike networks\, can improve mobility\, reduce environmental impact\, and help underserved communities thrive. “Access to public transit has been repeatedly shown to be the single biggest factor in an individual escaping a state of poverty. I dream of a future not where the poor drive\, but where the rich take the train.” As an aspiring civil engineer\, she is committed to building transportation systems that reduce inequality\, increase efficiency\, and protect the environment. \nMeet & Greet: 2026 PAE Scholar\, Brooklynn Roth\nWednesday\, July 8\n12:00-12:45pm\nVirtual \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:2026 Honored Citizen\, Vailey Oehlke
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Vailey Oehlke\nAs the Portland Metropolitan region celebrates the completion of the last three library projects in the 2020 library bond\, it is time to tip our hats to Vailey Oehlke\, the leader whose vision and tenacity ensured that our libraries were shaped by innovative thinking\, inclusive processes\, and community-centric and sustainable design. \nVailey Oehlke\, this year’s Honored Citizen\, was the transformative Executive Director of Multnomah County Library (MCL) from 2009-2024. As the oldest public library on the west coast\, Central Library and eighteen other neighborhood libraries are the second busiest library system among its peers in the country. In 2024\, visits to all the libraries exceeded two million patrons. For fifteen years\, Vailey was totally committed to ensuring Multnomah County Library remained valued\, relevant\, and responsive to the community. \nDuring Vailey’s tenure\, MCL became a national leader in providing innovative programs\, services\, and facilities to meet the emerging needs of the community. Her energy and leadership have shaped Multnomah County Library in profound ways. One of her first initiatives was to open long-promised branch libraries in the underserved communities of Kenton and Troutdale and she pushed for a new type of library – with increased access to technology\, community-centered spaces\, and award-winning design. \nEast County Library\, Holst Architecture\nVailey also set the goal to serve people who need us the most – the people furthest from opportunity. With community-centered staff she built culturally relevant services for those once excluded or marginalized because they were Black\, Indigenous\, and people of color. \nPerhaps her greatest legacy stems from her vision for the successful $387 million capital bond campaign of 2020 to rebalance\, expand\, and modernize the entire library system to better serve the county’s growing and diverse population. It is the most comprehensive rethinking of the library system in its 162-year history. Her goal of an innovative and hyper-inclusive public outreach process that gave voice to historically marginalized communities was foundational to the bond’s success. Between all the library projects\, there were hundreds of in-person and online opportunities to participate – from programming spaces to voting on finish materials and color schemes. \nAlbina Library\, LEVER Architecture\, Lara Swimmer\nFinally\, Vailey’s aspirations for architectural excellence are evident with the inspiring architectural designs created in combination with robust sustainable measures. All buildings\, new and renovations\, significantly reduce embodied and operational carbon and are Fossil Fuel free. LEED certifications include 1 LEED Platinum\, 7 LEED Gold\, and 1 LEED Silver. Six libraries are constructed using mass timber structural systems. These libraries were designed\, engineered and constructed by an impressive array of firms in our local AEC community. \nVailey was born in Portland\, where her father taught at Jefferson High School. After growing up mainly in the Midwest and teaching high school English\, she returned to Portland and was working as a copy editor at Stoel Rives law firm when the law librarian urged her to consider library studies. Vailey joined Multnomah County Library’s School Corps program as a youth librarian in 1997\, became the Director of Central Library\, then was promoted to Deputy Director in 2008\, and appointed Executive Director of Multnomah County Library District in 2009. \nJoin us on Thursday\, October 8 to celebrate this story of growth\, collaboration\, and fierce commitment to our community. \n2026 Honored Citizen\nThursday\, October 8\n5pm Reception  |  6:30pm Dinner\nHyatt Regency Portland\nat the Oregon Convention Center \nRegister | Sponsor
