Who will judge the best design? You guessed it: student participants from this spring’s Architects in Schools program. Don’t worry\, you will get to cast your vote for the People’s Choice award. \nAbout Architects in Schools (AiS)\nThe AiS program introduces Oregon’s youngest design-thinkers to the power and possibilities of design with the end goal of creating lifelong learners and critical thinkers who have a voice in their community. The program has grown to serving more than 5\,000 elementary and middle school students across the state of Oregon. \nAiS pairs classroom teachers with design professionals\, provides teacher/design professional training and residency preparation\, design professional classroom involvement\, supply fund support for low-income schools and a public exhibit of student work at the end of the residency period. In addition\, AFO offers a week long virtual summer camp based on AiS curricula for children ages 8-12. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a Saturday exploring wood and forests!\nHosted by Zena Forest Products \nFirst stop is a special tour of the Oregon State Forester’s building\, an underappreciated historical architectural gem in Salem that is not open to the public. Designed by Linn A. Forrest and built in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration and The Civilian Conservation Corps\, the building is a tour de force of local Oregon wood\, featuring 18 different native wood species in a myriad of carvings and millwork applications on the floors\, walls and ceilings. Mr. Forrest is also known for his work as the US Forest Service Architect who designed the beloved Timberline Lodge. \nSecond stop is at Zena Forest\, a short drive away in Rickreall. Enjoy lunch before you experience regenerative forestry in action at Zena Forest Products—the only company in Oregon that integrates every aspect of the timber process\, from sustainable forest management to crafting heirloom flooring in the mill and EdgeGrain facility. Nestled in the Eola Hills\, this Forest Stewardship Council® certified property is protected by a conservation easement and spans 1\,300 acres\, making it the largest contiguous block of forest in the Willamette Valley. On the tour\, you’ll walk through the forest and witness how the Deumling family balances natural growth with responsible harvesting to maintain the forest’s health amid the realities of climate change. Register by 5pm PT on June 12 to participate. \nCAMP THEME:\nThis year’s camp theme is Small Changes = BIG IMPACT\, Designing Sustainable and Resilient Communities. What are small things that you can do in your community to make it more sustainable and resilient? Let’s explore together! Camp participants will learn about ways they can use design to support some of our smallest community members – birds and bugs! Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing\, planning\, model making\, and more. By implementing the design process\, they will make small changes in their community that create a BIG impact! \nHOW IT WORKS:\nThe camp is entirely virtual – meaning students can participate from home. To engage in the camp\, participants will need a computer\, tablet\, or other device with access to internet. \nEvery day\, we will email you the digital lesson including hands-on design activities\, reading\, thinking exercises\, and pre-recorded videos. There will also be a live Zoom session every day from 12:30-1:30pm PT. The live sessions are optional but highly recommended so students can meet practicing architects and designers and fully experience the camp content. \nDAILY SCHEDULE: \n\nWork through the Daily Lesson PDF that is emailed to you the evening prior to each day of camp\nWatch the Pre-recorded Videos\nStart on activities in your Student Architect Journal\nJoin us for a Live Zoom Activity from 12:30-1:30pm PT\nGo back to your Student Architect Journal and complete the activities for the day\nComplete the Bonus Challenge if you want to do more!\n\nACCESSING FREE ART SUPPLIES:\nWe will mail art supplies to participants located in Oregon. Boxes of supplies will be $25 for those able to pay\, but will be available at no cost to those who are experiencing financial barriers. Please fill out this supply box request form and select to pay if you are able. See the recommended list of art supplies. Supply requests are due by June 5.  \nCOST:\nWe recommend a participation fee of $25/child. DESCRIPTION:Get a first look at the brand new PSU Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design!\nHosted by LEVER Architecture \nTour the stunning new PSU Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design with the design team from LEVER Architecture! See the new building invigorating the Park Blocks that brings together PSU’s Art Practice\, Art History\, and Graphic Design departments for the first time. With a design that was conceived through an initiative centering student voices\, equity and inclusion\, the LEED Gold (target) building includes sustainable design elements including a fully planted roof and a mass timber structure. \nThis event includes a talk and tour but doesn’t include food or beverages.
