SUMMARY:Leading with Cultural Humility: Tools for Building Trust and Connection
DESCRIPTION:This workshop\, facilitated by Leadership Training Initiative\, is intended to help prepare participants to feel more comfortable interacting with a variety of people from different backgrounds and ages. All are welcome. The workshop will focus on skills for cultural humility\, trauma-informed engagement\, and practical presentation strategies to honor a diversity of lived experiences as well as create psychological safety. \nThe Architecture Foundation of Oregon (AFO) centers education and access for youth at the heart of our programming. We are excited to offer opportunities for design professionals\, educators\, youth organizers\, and more to receive training on trauma-informed practices and social/emotional learning. \nAFO believes that all adults working with youth have a responsibility to not create harm\, to give youth space to express their true selves\, to look to them as experts\, and to center them in our teaching and learning. AFO understands that these are skills that require ongoing learning and will help us be more empathetic and effective teachers\, mentors and leaders. \nPLEASE NOTE: All current AFO volunteers\, board members\, committee members\, and 2025-26 Architects in Schools and Formation Mentorship participants have free access to this workshop. SUMMARY:Celebrating Morgan Dawkins\, 2025 PAE Scholar
DESCRIPTION:Join AFO and PAE at a virtual celebration for our inaugural PAE Scholar\, Morgan Dawkins.\nSpend your Friday lunch hour meeting Morgan and learning more about the annual $5\,000 PAE Diversity in Engineering Scholarship! \nMorgan Dawkins (she/her) is an Architectural Engineering major with a specialization in construction at Penn State. She believes that engineering plays an important role in creating equitable solutions and is passionate about protecting marginalized communities through disaster-resilient infrastructure. \n“Growing up in Rocky Mount\, North Carolina\, I saw the vulnerability of communities like mine to natural disasters… The state’s vulnerability\, particularly in flood-prone areas like Rocky Mount\, really kickstarted my desire to specialize in resilient and sustainable building structures. \nBy focusing on inclusive and sustainable designs\, I believe that engineers can tackle issues such as climate change\, while also addressing the socio-economic disparities that often exacerbate the effects of environmental challenges… I plan to use my degree to design structures that not only address climate justice but also create opportunities for everyone to be successful in a sustainable and resilient future.” – Morgan Dawkins\, 2025 PAE Scholar \nCelebrating Morgan Dawkins\, 2025 PAE Scholar\nFriday\, July 18\n12:00-12:45pm\nZoom \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Sketch Night @ City of Possibility
DESCRIPTION:Fall back in love with the art of drawing at Sketch Night!\nSome consider sketching and model-making – both formerly essential crafts in the design process – to be dying arts in the age of digital creation. You are invited to explore both with AFO at the much-celebrated City of Possibility exhibition\, where more than 50 historic and contemporary architectural models are on display. \nGrab your sketch pad and favorite drawing utensils and join your fellow design enthusiasts for an evening of contemplation and reimagination. Miles Woofter\, Founding Principal of Woofter Bolch Architecture\, and Nicolai Kruger\, Founder of Nicolai Kruger Studio\, will lead the audience in a series of exercises and prompts using the array of architectural models as inspiration. \n\nThis event is free for AFO members and one of their guests. Non-member tickets are available for purchase. \nNot a member yet? Join our movement to educate and inspire Oregonians of all ages and backgrounds to engage in the design of our built environment by becoming a member today!

SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Practices Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Architecture Foundation of Oregon (AFO) centers education and access for youth at the heart of our programming. \nPlease join us for a trauma-informed practices and social/emotional learning workshop. Facilitated by Dr. Renee Mitchell\, an educator\, writer\, poet and expert on these topics\, the workshops are intended to help prepare you and make you more comfortable working with youth from different backgrounds. All are welcome. \nPLEASE NOTE: All current AFO volunteers\, board members\, committee members\, and 2024-2025 Architects in Schools and Formation Mentorship participants have free access to this workshop. Please contact candice@af-oregon.org if you are a current volunteer and have not received the Zoom link. \nRegister\nTuesday\, January 21\, 4:00-6:00pm\, Zoom \n$20 (Limited scholarships available – contact candice@af-oregon.org if you would like to request a scholarship)
