Due to federal policy\, all participants who enter the building must be fully vaccinated. We appreciate your cooperation and welcome any questions. \nAccessibility: There are ADA-accessible restrooms on every floor. All  restrooms are gender-neutral and individual. We’ll round it out with wine and snacks on the Stoel Rives deck with sweeping views of Portland. You don’t need to be a designer or yogi to appreciate this after-work destressing activity – all you need is a body! \nApproved for AIA LU|HSW credit for continuing education. \nFriday\, July 30th \n4:30-7:00pm \nDetails & Registration\n \nAccessibility Information: We strive to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals\, including individuals with disabilities\, to engage fully. SUMMARY:Architects in Schools Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us July 26-30\, 2021 for our second annual Architects in Schools Summer Camp! During this camp\, students will explore the world of architecture and learn how to design a building for a client with different needs. The virtual camp is free and recommended for youth ages 8-12. Register by 5pm PST on July 12 to participate. \n  \nThis year’s camp theme is They All Saw a Building: Designing for Everyone’s Needs. The camp will center on equity focused architecture and challenge students to think about how people of different backgrounds\, abilities and cultures may experience the same space in different ways. Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing\, planning and model making\, while exploring the social and cultural implications that architecture has on the world – because architecture impacts everybody! They will apply this knowledge to their own design of a building that puts the needs of their client first. \n  \nThe camp is entirely virtual – meaning students can participate from home. To engage in the camp\, participants will need a computer\, tablet\, or other device with access to internet. Everyday\, we will email you the digital lesson including hands-on activities\, reading\, thinking exercises\, and pre-recorded videos. There will also be a live Zoom session everyday from 12:30-1:30pm PST. The live sessions are optional\, but we do recommend students try to join as many as possible to fully experience the camp content. \n  \nWe will mail free art supplies to participants who are experiencing financial barriers. Please specify on your registration form if you need supplies sent to you. The art supplies and materials that participants will need throughout the camp include paper\, pencils\, coloring tools (i.e. colored pencils\, markers or crayons)\, scissors\, glue or tape\, a brown paper grocery bag and recycled materials (i.e. cardboard\, toilet paper rolls\, cereal boxes\, shoe boxes\, plastic bottles\, etc.). \n  \nParticipation in the camp is free. We are accepting donations so we can send camp materials to families who have barriers to accessing them. This will allow all children to participate regardless of need. Please consider giving to the Architecture Foundation of Oregon to supply all participants with materials and to help us offer free educational programs like this camp. Donate here. Thank you! \n  \nIf you have any questions about the camp\, please contact Architects in Schools Director\, Kim Knowles at kim@af-oregon.org. \nREGISTER NOW\nREGISTRATION DEADLINE: July 12\, 5pm PST \n  \nWould you like to connect with students throughout the camp and inspire them through architecture? Sign up to volunteer during our daily live Zoom sessions! Submit a volunteer form. \n  \nSpecial thank you to our sponsors

SUMMARY:2019 Honored Citizen Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Joachim Grube\nMonday\, October 14\, 2019\nOregon Convention Center\nPortland Ballroom\nno-host cocktails at 5:30pm\ndinner and program at 7pm \n  \nWe are thrilled to announce AFO’s 2019 Honored Citizen\, Joachim Grube\, who has contributed to the built environment in Oregon and around the world for decades. \n  \nOver his career as one of the leaders in the Oregon architecture community\, Joachim Grube has established himself as a true visionary who embraces innovative and purpose-driven design. You can find his influence in buildings across the state like Timberline Lodge\, where he guided the implementation of the new winter entrance\, and his collaborations with Pietro Belluschi on six churches including the University of Portland Chapel. Joachim’s legacy also includes creating successful partnerships between Portland architect/engineer teams and developing world professionals to design and deliver state-of-the-art facilities contributing to economic development around the world. \n  \nJoachim was born in the Free City of Danzig in 1932. At the end of World War II\, he and his family found themselves in a refugee camp with thousands of other displaced people. Following repatriation to West Germany and after completion of a bricklayer apprenticeship\, he graduated from the Hamburg School of Architecture. His first professional experience in Hamburg was followed by further study and an architectural internship in Berlin. \n  \nAfter marrying Liz\, a traveling student from Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, the couple decided to move to Oregon where Joachim worked at William Fletcher and SOM offices. In 1961 he was recruited by the UN to design Teacher Training Institutes across Africa as part of UNESCO’s Regional Planning Office in Khartoum\, Sudan. The four year assignment was an eye-opener for the couple and their two young children\, which compelled Joachim to focus his career on projects in developing countries. \n  \nUpon his return to Portland\, Joachim became a founding member of Yost Grube Hall Architecture\, a firm that for over 50 years has helped shape the built environment in Portland and left its mark in 45 countries overseas. But Joachim has also helped shape the lives of countless young professionals over the years. He is regarded as an artist\, a mentor and an advocate for new voices. By encouraging and supporting a diverse community of architects\, designers\, engineers and artists\, Joachim has served as a touchstone for an entire new generation of professionals.
