SUMMARY:REFRESH@Meier&Frank
DESCRIPTION:Refresh connections\, tour a refreshed building\, and enjoy refreshments at afo’s (almost) summer celebration\, REFRESH@Meier&Frank! \nConnect with afo members and friends\, and celebrate this beautifully reimagined historic building which so clearly articulates afo’s vision of sharing design’s role in shaping our future. \nThe Meier & Frank Building was designed by prolific Portland architect\, A.E. Doyle\, and built in the 1920’s using glazed terra cotta on its exterior for its flagship department store. The building has undergone various iterations since then and is now getting a fresh look thanks to Sterling Bay who is transforming the first five floors of this 16-story architectural classic into creative office space with the capable team of Bora Architects\, Turner Construction and many others. \nTour the building with members of the building team\, enjoy food and drink\, and mingle with friends and colleagues for the most lively event of the season. The Cyrus Nabipoor Quartet will be stopping in with some top-notch jazz which you can’t often hear outside of New Orleans! \nProceeds from this event benefit afo’s programs and services\, including Architects in Schools.

SUMMARY:2019 Hatfield Scholars Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Join us and 150 other leaders in the designed and built industries to honor the history of the prestigious Senator Mark O. Hatfield Architectural Award and introduce this year’s awardees\, Mohamed Fahkry\, Portland State University and Zachary Sherrod\, University of Oregon. \nThis year\, we will hear from guest speaker\, Alice Wiewel\, the State Architect of the Oregon Department of Administrative Services Chief Financial Office. Her office develops policy for the State’s building portfolio\, particularly its focus on resilience\, stewardship\, design excellence and sustainability. \n  \nMohamed Fahkry & Zachary Sherrod\, 2019 Hatfield Scholars\nThe Awardees \nMohamed Fahkry\, 4th year undergraduate student at Portland State University\, aspires to create architecture that represents the communities he is rooted to and the communities that have shaped him\, including NE Portland and Senegal\, where he spent a majority of his childhood. He is passionate about finding “new and innovative approaches to build self-sustainable communities where members of all ages would be able to strive\, learn\, and grow to become productive\, engaged\, and successful members of society.” He is engaged in several volunteer organizations including the PSU Student Sustainability Center\, Oregon Food Bank\, Solve Oregon and Portland Adventist Community Services. \n  \nZachary Sherrod\, 4th year undergraduate student at University of Oregon\, is engaged and interested in affordable housing solutions\, specifically in rural Oregon communities like his hometown of La Grande.
