SUMMARY:Architects in Schools Spring Break Camp
DESCRIPTION:They All Saw a Building: Designing for Everyone’s Needs\nIn July 2021\, students from across Oregon and beyond participated in our virtual 2021 Architects in Schools Summer Camp. During this camp\, students explored the world of architecture and learned how to design a building for a client with special needs. \nWe are excited to publicly release the camp content again for you this Spring Break\, 2022! Camp material is free and recommended for youth ages 8-12. \nEach day of the five-day-long camp\, students work through a lesson\, watch a video featuring architects and design professionals\, and complete a design activity or two. We have included daily bonus challenges for students who want to do more! Bonus challenges are optional and can always be completed at a later date. \nWe recommend students work through the content day by day and in order. Everything is self-paced\, so you can take as much time as you want to work through the materials. \nAll camp material below will remain available for March and April\, 2022. \nAccess the camp content here and get started on designing your future city!

SUMMARY:Benton County Historical Society’s Corvallis Museum Tour
DESCRIPTION:  \n**********CANCELLATION**********\nUnfortunately\, this event has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please see our website if you are interested in other AFO events.\n\nDiscover a New Gem in Corvallis\nHosted by Allied Works and Gerding Builders \nTour the beautiful Benton County Historical Society’s Corvallis Museum with designers from Portland/New York architecture firm Allied Works\, known for designs of major museums in the U.S. Situated among historic storefronts in downtown Corvallis\, the Corvallis Museum collection includes over 120\,000 artifacts including photographs\, historical documents\, textiles\, domestic arts\, farm tools\, scientific instruments\, and personal effects. \nThe Corvallis Museum was designed with reverence for natural light and materials. To preserve paintings\, museum buildings typically limit light. However\, the Corvallis Museum is primarily object-based\, allowing for a striking openness in the design. Galleries include full-size windows that invite the street in. The Corvallis Museum won the 2021 AIA Northwest & Pacific Region Honor Award and a 2021 Honor Award from AIA Oregon. \nWe will tour the building with insights from designers from Allied Works and Jessica Hougen\, Director at Corvallis Museum. Beer\, wine\, and appetizers will be served. \nDine & Design raises money to support the programs of AFO\, including our vital Architects in Schools program which serves thousands of elementary students per year around Oregon. \n \nACCESSIBILITY: The building is accessible by ramps\, elevators\, and doorways provide necessary clearances for mobility devices. ADA-accessible bathrooms are available. Tours of the building will not include additional amplification devices. AFO cares about accessibility – please let us know if you have any questions/concerns that would impact your participation. \nCOVID: AFO will follow all federal/state/local guidelines\, which may fluctuate. We will not require masks. We ask that if you have any flu or cold-like symptoms or have had a sustained exposure to someone with COVID infection that you stay home. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

SUMMARY:Art & Cocktails with Motoi Yamamoto's Staying In Time
DESCRIPTION:Art Installation and Cocktail Party\nCelebrating PLACE’s 10+ Year Anniversary \n \nPLACE invites you to a unique Japanese-inspired experience with food and music to celebrate artist-in-residence Motoi Yamamoto’s Staying In Time installation. \nMotoi Yamamoto and PLACE engaged Oregon-based Jacobsen Salt to explore life\, love\, death\, and memories and how they relate to society especially as we reflect on the pandemic. Items full of memories\, cherished by the deceased…what do we lose when we let go of such things? Can we separate the memories from the items and tuck them away in our hearts? Salt has always been deeply linked to people’s lives in the East and West and in Japan\, it is an indispensable substance for customs such as funerals. Motoi started using salt because it represents purification and cleansing. This smooth and gentle crystal enveloped his heart in an embrace as it was wracked with feelings of loss. \nMotoi’s work has appeared at the MoMA P.S.1 Museum of Modern Art in New York\, The Hermitage State Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo\, Hakone Open-Air Museum\, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa\, Setouchi Triennale and more wonderful communities worldwide. \nRegister Now\nAll proceeds benefit AFO programming\, including Architects in Schools and multiple scholarship opportunities. \n \nACCESSIBILITY: This event will be accessible by wheelchair or mobility device.  AFO cares about accessibility – please let us know if you have any questions/concerns that would impact your participation. \nCOVID: AFO will follow all federal/state/local guidelines\, which may fluctuate. SUMMARY:2022 Honored Citizen Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Every fall\, the Oregon architectural and building community comes together to celebrate the work and legacy of some of our most impactful contributors. This year\, AFO is excited to celebrate Lillian Pitt who has helped shape our state through her work as an artist\, mentor\, and advocate. Lillian was born on the Warm Springs Reservation and is of Warm Springs\, Wasco\, and Yakima descent. \nLillian’s art has been at the heart of numerous building projects across the state and around the world. Many structures around the Pacific Northwest have been elevated by Lillian’s work. With the Confluence project\, she designed the Welcome Gate for the Vancouver Land Bridge; her art also adorns Portland Tri-Met stations\, the Native American Student Center at Portland State University\, as well as sites in Sapporo\, Japan. \nTelling the story of her ancestors through her art – whether large-scale public art installations or smaller pieces of intricately designed jewelry – Lillian is an artist whose work is all around us. But her impact is not limited to the pieces she has produced. Lillian is a deeply committed mentor to numerous Indigenous artists from across the Pacific Northwest. By encouraging and cultivating the next generation of Native American artists\, Lillian is ensuring that the Indigenous story of Oregon is remembered and honored. \nArt is an essential part of our built environment. From public installations and sculptures to masks or jewelry\, Lillian works at every level of scale. We are inspired by her ethic to consider how we might make an impact at every scale and medium we work with. \nRegister Now\nView our sponsor packet or contact Susan Myers at susan@af-oregon.org for more information.

SUMMARY:Cocktails & Trees Exhibit at PLACE
DESCRIPTION:Blackstone Hill Tree\, Hokkaido\, Japan. 2020 © Michael Kenna\nArt Installation and Cocktail Party \nJoin us for an exclusive U.S. exhibition of Michael Kenna’s Trees and enjoy cocktails at PLACE. \nFor over fifty years\, Michael Kenna has been looking at landscapes in unique and out of the ordinary ways. An innovator and true master in photography\, Michael pioneered minimalist black and white images\, often captured on multi-hour-long exposures. All done on film\, his work could not be mistaken for anyone else’s. His mysterious photographs concentrate on the interaction between ephemeral atmospheric conditions of the natural landscape\, human-made structures\, and sculptural mass. Kenna is both a diurnal and nocturnal photographer\, fascinated by times of day when light is at its most pliant. \nHis masterfully crafted prints are always sold out\, his books are considered works of art\, and his exhibitions are in numerous galleries and permanent museums’ collections throughout the world. The National Gallery\, Washington\, D.C.; The Bibliotheque Nationale\, Paris; The Shanghai Art Museum; and The Victoria and Albert Museum\, London – are always sought after when displaying Kenna’s talent. PLACE is honored to host the occasion with Michael’s long-term collaborator and special guest Mark Silva. \nCocktails and Trees at PLACE\nWednesday\, May 3\n5:00-7:00pm\nPLACE\, 735 NW 18th Ave\, Portland \nRegister Now\nDine & Design proceeds benefit AFO programming\, including Architects in Schools and AFO scholarships. \nLearn more about Dine & Design.

SUMMARY:Water Tower: Reimagining a Portland Icon
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Scott Edwards Architecture  \nBe one of the first to experience the stunning new design of The Water Tower in John’s Landing. Long a fixture in this community\, with a rich history involving some of Portland’s key visionaries\, this building has been through many iterations. \nOriginally built in 1903 as a furniture warehouse for the Portland/Biltwell Furniture Company\, over time it has evolved to be a mixed-use office and retail complex. Scott Edwards Architecture’s renovation design focuses on preserving elements of the building’s past\, like heavy timber beams and its namesake water tower\, while updating the space for modern tenancy needs. \nEnjoy hors d’oeuvres and libations\, a discussion of the building led by architecture writer Brian Libby\, and tours of the building. \nWater Tower: Reimagining a Portland Icon\nTuesday\, June 6\n5:00-7:00pm\nThe Water Tower\, 5331 S Macadam Ave\, Portland \nRegister Now\nAFO Members – $55\nNon-AFO Members – $65\nStudent & Emerging Professionals – $25 \nDine & Design proceeds benefit AFO programming\, including Architects in Schools and AFO scholarships. \nLearn more about Dine & Design.
