SUMMARY:2022 Honored Citizen Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Every fall\, the Oregon architectural and building community comes together to celebrate the work and legacy of some of our most impactful contributors. This year\, AFO is excited to celebrate Lillian Pitt who has helped shape our state through her work as an artist\, mentor\, and advocate. Lillian was born on the Warm Springs Reservation and is of Warm Springs\, Wasco\, and Yakima descent. \nLillian’s art has been at the heart of numerous building projects across the state and around the world. Many structures around the Pacific Northwest have been elevated by Lillian’s work. With the Confluence project\, she designed the Welcome Gate for the Vancouver Land Bridge; her art also adorns Portland Tri-Met stations\, the Native American Student Center at Portland State University\, as well as sites in Sapporo\, Japan. \nTelling the story of her ancestors through her art – whether large-scale public art installations or smaller pieces of intricately designed jewelry – Lillian is an artist whose work is all around us. But her impact is not limited to the pieces she has produced. Lillian is a deeply committed mentor to numerous Indigenous artists from across the Pacific Northwest. By encouraging and cultivating the next generation of Native American artists\, Lillian is ensuring that the Indigenous story of Oregon is remembered and honored. \nArt is an essential part of our built environment. From public installations and sculptures to masks or jewelry\, Lillian works at every level of scale. We are inspired by her ethic to consider how we might make an impact at every scale and medium we work with. \nRegister Now\nView our sponsor packet or contact Susan Myers at susan@af-oregon.org for more information.

SUMMARY:Art & Cocktails with Motoi Yamamoto's Staying In Time
DESCRIPTION:Art Installation and Cocktail Party\nCelebrating PLACE’s 10+ Year Anniversary \n \nPLACE invites you to a unique Japanese-inspired experience with food and music to celebrate artist-in-residence Motoi Yamamoto’s Staying In Time installation. \nMotoi Yamamoto and PLACE engaged Oregon-based Jacobsen Salt to explore life\, love\, death\, and memories and how they relate to society especially as we reflect on the pandemic. Items full of memories\, cherished by the deceased…what do we lose when we let go of such things? Can we separate the memories from the items and tuck them away in our hearts? Salt has always been deeply linked to people’s lives in the East and West and in Japan\, it is an indispensable substance for customs such as funerals. Motoi started using salt because it represents purification and cleansing. This smooth and gentle crystal enveloped his heart in an embrace as it was wracked with feelings of loss. \nMotoi’s work has appeared at the MoMA P.S.1 Museum of Modern Art in New York\, The Hermitage State Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo\, Hakone Open-Air Museum\, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa\, Setouchi Triennale and more wonderful communities worldwide. \nRegister Now\nAll proceeds benefit AFO programming\, including Architects in Schools and multiple scholarship opportunities. \n \nACCESSIBILITY: This event will be accessible by wheelchair or mobility device.  AFO cares about accessibility – please let us know if you have any questions/concerns that would impact your participation. \nCOVID: AFO will follow all federal/state/local guidelines\, which may fluctuate. We will not require masks. We ask that if you have any flu or cold-like symptoms or have had sustained exposure to someone with COVID infection you stay home. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

DESCRIPTION:  \n**********CANCELLATION**********\nUnfortunately\, this event has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please see our website if you are interested in other AFO events.\n\nDiscover a New Gem in Corvallis\nHosted by Allied Works and Gerding Builders \nTour the beautiful Benton County Historical Society’s Corvallis Museum with designers from Portland/New York architecture firm Allied Works\, known for designs of major museums in the U.S. Situated among historic storefronts in downtown Corvallis\, the Corvallis Museum collection includes over 120\,000 artifacts including photographs\, historical documents\, textiles\, domestic arts\, farm tools\, scientific instruments\, and personal effects. \nThe Corvallis Museum was designed with reverence for natural light and materials. The Corvallis Museum won the 2021 AIA Northwest & Pacific Region Honor Award and a 2021 Honor Award from AIA Oregon. \nWe will tour the building with insights from designers from Allied Works and Jessica Hougen\, Director at Corvallis Museum. SUMMARY:Architects in Schools Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us July 11-15\, 2022 for our annual Architects in Schools Summer Camp! During this camp\, students will explore ways to address climate change through sustainable architecture and design solutions. The virtual camp is free and recommended for youth ages 8-12. Register by 5pm PT on July 1 to participate. \n  \nThis year’s camp theme is SMALL CHANGES = BIG IMPACT\, Designing for a Sustainable and Resilient Future. What are small things that you can do in your community to address climate change? Let’s explore\, together! Camp participants will learn about the benefits of sustainable architecture and discover ways they can use design to protect the natural environment. Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing\, planning\, model making and more. They will identify small changes they can make in their community to create a BIG impact! \n  \nThe camp is entirely virtual – meaning students can participate from home. To engage in the camp\, participants will need a computer\, tablet\, or other device with access to internet. Every day\, we will email you the digital lesson including hands-on activities\, reading\, thinking exercises\, and pre-recorded videos. There will also be a live Zoom session everyday from 12:30-1:30pm PT. The live sessions are optional\, but we do recommend students try to join as many as possible to fully experience the camp content. \n  \nWe will mail free art supplies to participants who are experiencing financial barriers. Please specify on your registration form if you need supplies sent to you. SUPPLY REQUESTS ARE DUE BY JUNE 24. See the full list of recommended art supplies. \n  \nParticipation in the camp is free. We are accepting donations so we can send camp materials to families who have barriers to accessing them. This will allow all children to participate regardless of need. Please consider giving to the Architecture Foundation of Oregon to supply all participants with materials and to help us offer free educational programs like this camp. Donate here. Thank you! \n  \nIf you have any questions about the camp\, please contact Architects in Schools Director\, Kim Knowles at kim@af-oregon.org. \n  \nREGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED\nRegistration deadline: July 1\, 5pm PT\nSupply requests due by June 24 \n  \nWould you like to connect with students during our daily live Zoom sessions and inspire them through architecture? This reimagined\, state-of-the-art venue is inspired by the rich history of UO’s Track & Field program\, its world-class athletes\, and the spirit and legacy of inspiring game-changers like Nike co-founder and storied Oregon coach Bill Bowerman\, track star and cultural icon Steve Prefontaine\, and many others that together make this site “magic.” Generously funded by Phil and Penny Knight and over 50 additional donors\, Hayward Field builds on this legacy by both acknowledging the past while providing a bold vision for the future. \nDesigned and built for athletes in every way imaginable\, this tour will highlight the unique features and amenities throughout the facility that aim to enhance performance\, training\, and recovery\, as well as enhancing the experience and intimacy between athletes and fans. \nAfter the tour\, lunch and refreshments will be served. Proceeds will benefit The Architecture Foundation of Oregon in its mission to educate\, inspire\, and engage Oregonians with the built environment. \nFreshen your connections. Get inspired. SUMMARY:Embodying Inclusive Design
DESCRIPTION:How can body awareness make us better\, more inclusive designers?\nWhether we notice it or not\, our offices\, homes\, and other built spaces greatly impact our overall health and sense of belonging. Many of us spend our entire workday locked in a chair\, breathing recirculated air\, and focused entirely on external demands. In this Dine & Design event\, we’ll refocus on our bodies and wellness as a means of building awareness of the design choices that can improve comfort and access for people with a wide range of needs. \nStretch your mind and body\nHannah Silver\, Founder of Informal/Function\, will introduce us to the basics of inclusive design and lead a gentle stretch. We’ll round it out with wine and snacks on the Stoel Rives deck with sweeping views of Portland. You don’t need to be a designer or yogi to appreciate this after-work destressing activity – all you need is a body! \nApproved for AIA LU|HSW credit for continuing education. \nFriday\, July 30th \n4:30-7:00pm \nDetails & Registration\n \nAccessibility Information: We strive to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals\, including individuals with disabilities\, to engage fully. Please describe any accessibility concerns or questions in your registration form. \nThe building includes ramp/elevator access\, accessible bathrooms\, and wide doorways/aisles. The location is accessible by Trimet\, Portland Street Car\, and includes nearby bike parking. \nDine & Design raises money to support the programs of AFO\, including our vital Architects in Schools program which serves thousands of elementary students per year around Oregon. \n
