SUMMARY:2024 Honored Citizen\, Jon Schleuning
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Jon Schleuning\nJon Schleuning has been instrumental for nearly 50 years in raising public awareness of architecture and its impact on environments. Jon\, a proud native Oregonian\, has exhibited great leadership deeply rooted in the values of Portland and the Pacific Northwest. He received the 2014 Medal of Honor from the American Institute of Architects’ Northwest & Pacific Region and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His work spans professional\, civic\, and volunteer engagements that continue to impact the region in numerous ways. \nJon is most prominently associated with co-founding SRG Partnership\, Inc. His passionate\, high-energy direction has produced a team-based approach that consistently advances results combining design excellence with experience\, function\, performance\, and context. His many projects include the Oregon Coast Aquarium\, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute\, and the Mount St. Helens Visitor’s Center. Notably\, the Portland International Airport prior to the current renovations bears Jon’s transformational influence. Through his active leadership in the 1980’s\, PDX pioneered the Oregon Market concept\, featuring locally-made products at market prices. This daring new strategy very quickly attained unprecedented economic success\, making PDX a regional gateway and model for other airports nationwide. \nCivically\, Jon has challenged tradition to integrate solutions that elevate the human spirit\, catalyze communities\, and reduce our carbon footprint for individual structures and district-wide scales. His innovative mark is evident in the design and evolution of the Portland Downtown Plan\, which he accomplished through a mayoral appointed position. He served on numerous committees and review boards\, and advised leaders on projects that led to Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Arts District\, including the Portland Art Museum\, Oregon Historical Society\, and Portland’5 Center for the Arts. His voice ensured design and architectural expertise were present in these specific civic initiatives. \nIn addition to these accomplishments\, Jon dedicated his leadership to design and civic focused organizations\, including the AIA\, the City Club of Portland\, and as a founding member of the Architecture Foundation of Oregon. We are proud to have the opportunity to honor such an impactful member of our community. \n2024 Honored Citizen\nSustaining Sponsorship by University of Oregon College of Design \nTuesday\, October 10\n5pm Reception  |  6:30pm Dinner\nOregon Convention Center\nPortland Ballroom \nRegister Now\nVolunteer at the event in exchange for free admission! SUMMARY:Increasing Housing while Preserving Heritage: A Workshop on Dynamic Density
DESCRIPTION:A presentation followed by a mock public design workshop about middle-scale housing in Portland’s classic neighborhoods.\nHosted by City Club of Portland and AFO \nRick Potestio\, an Architecture Foundation of Oregon Van Evera Bailey Fellow\, and Jonathan Konkol\, Chair of City Club of Portland’s Built Environment Committee\, will share what they learned from their three-year study of middle-scale housing in Portland’s classic neighborhoods. \nTheir research\, supported by AFO\, delved into historic multifamily housing\, neighborhood dynamics\, economics\, and community planning. From this work\, they developed the dynamic density development model\, an approach to increasing housing density that also respects neighborhood character and engages residents in shaping change to benefit the whole community. \nAfter the presentation\, Rick and Jonathan will facilitate a mock public design workshop where participants will engage in hands-on activities to apply the principles of dynamic density. \nIncreasing Housing while Preserving Heritage: A Workshop on Dynamic Density\nTuesday\, November 19\n5:00-7:00pm\nAutodesk Portland\n221 Southeast Ankeny Street\, Portland\, 97214 \nRegister Now\nFree for AFO & City Club of Portland Members\n$10 for non-members

DESCRIPTION:The Architecture Foundation of Oregon (AFO) centers education and access for youth at the heart of our programming. We are excited to offer opportunities for design professionals\, educators\, youth organizers\, and more to receive training on trauma-informed practices and social/emotional learning. \nAFO believes that all adults working with youth have a responsibility to not create harm\, to give youth space to express their true selves\, to look to them as experts\, and to center them in our teaching and learning. Facilitated by Dr. Renee Mitchell\, an educator\, writer\, poet and expert on these topics\, the workshops are intended to help prepare you and make you more comfortable working with youth from different backgrounds. All are welcome. \nPLEASE NOTE: All current AFO volunteers\, board members\, committee members\, and 2024-2025 Architects in Schools and Formation Mentorship participants have free access to this workshop.
