SUMMARY:REFRESH @ The Portland Building
DESCRIPTION:Re-engage with friends and colleagues and tour the newly completed Portland Building.  \nBeer\, wine\, and light appetizers \nREFRESH is an annual mixer and jovial networking opportunity for design and building professionals\, especially younger individuals working to advance their career prospects\, to enhance connections across the industry. Held at a different and architecturally exciting location each summer\, the event brings together over 100 guests to learn about a stunning newly renovated\, reimagined\, or brand new project. Guests will learn more about what makes the project special from the designers and builders and mingle at AFO’s second largest annual event of the year. \nThe iconic Portland Building\, originally designed by renowned architect Michael Graves\, accommodates approximately 1\,400 workers primarily with city bureaus and Multnomah County offices. For the recent renovation\, the City chose progressive design-build as the best delivery model for a collaborative team approach to the reconstruction project\, featuring a core team including DLR Group\, Balfour Beatty\, and the City of Portland. \nThe building first opened as City offices in 1982 and incorporated several design features that didn’t adapt over the building’s 40-year life span. The reconstruction restored some of the original design vision\, while adapting a new vision for the city. A unitized curtain wall recreates the original colors and shapes of Michael Graves’ design intent while solving for many of the building’s technical performance issues\, from moisture to daylight. \nJoin us to experience this building which was recognized by the Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies with a 2021 American Architectural Award. \nAll funds raised by this event go toward supporting AFO\, which includes programs such as Architects in Schools and multiple scholarship opportunities. \nRegister\nREFRESH @ The Portland Building\nWednesday\, August 2\, 5-7pm\nPortland Building\n1120 SW 5th Ave\, Portland\, 97204 \nBecome a Sponsor

SUMMARY:Architects in Schools Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 24-28\, 2023\, for our annual Architects in Schools Summer Camp! The virtual camp is free and designed for youth ages 8-12. Register by 5pm PT on July 14 to participate. \nCAMP THEME:\nThis year’s camp theme is Design is Monumental: Celebrating the Untold Stories of our Everyday Heroes. Monuments have not historically been representative of all communities. We’re here to change that! Camp participants will take on the role of an architect and builder to identify their hero and tell their story through the design of a monument. Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing\, planning\, model making and more\, while exploring additional art and design fields that impact our daily lives. \nHOW IT WORKS:\nThe camp is entirely virtual – meaning students can participate from home. To engage in the camp\, participants will need a computer\, tablet\, or other device with access to internet. \nEvery day\, we will email you the digital lesson including hands-on design activities\, reading\, thinking exercises\, and pre-recorded videos. There will also be a live Zoom session every day from 12:30-1:30pm PT. The live sessions are optional but are highly recommended so students can meet practicing architects and designers and fully experience the camp content. \nDAILY SCHEDULE: \n\nWork through the Daily Lesson PDF that is emailed to you the evening prior to each day of camp\nWatch the Pre-recorded Videos\nStart on activities in your Student Architect Journal\nJoin us for a Live Zoom Activity from 12:30-1:30pm PT\nGo back to your Student Architect Journal and complete the activities for the day\nComplete the Bonus Challenge if you want to do more!\n\nACCESSING FREE ART SUPPLIES:\nWe will mail free art supplies to participants located in Oregon who are experiencing financial barriers. Please specify on your registration form if you need supplies sent to you. See the full list of recommended art supplies. SUPPLY REQUESTS ARE DUE BY JULY 7.  \nSUPPORT THE CAMP:\nParticipation in the camp is free. We are accepting donations so we can send camp materials to families who have barriers to accessing them. This will allow all children to participate regardless of need. Please consider giving to the Architecture Foundation of Oregon to supply all participants with materials and to help us offer free educational programs like this camp. Donate here. Thank you! \nQUESTIONS?\nIf you have any questions about the camp\, please contact Architects in Schools Director\, Kim Knowles at kim@af-oregon.org. \nRegistration is now closed\nRegistration deadline: July 14\, 5pm PT\nSupply requests due by July 7 \n  \nWould you like to connect with students during our daily live Zoom sessions and inspire them through architecture? Sign up to volunteer! \n  \nWe are accepting magazine donations so we can supply students with magazines for their collaging activity. Contact candice@af-oregon.org if you have magazines that we can take off your hands. \n  \nSpecial thanks to our Sponsors \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Blackstone Hill Tree\, Hokkaido\, Japan. 2020 © Michael Kenna\nArt Installation and Cocktail Party \nJoin us for an exclusive U.S. exhibition of Michael Kenna’s Trees and enjoy cocktails at PLACE. \nFor over fifty years\, Michael Kenna has been looking at landscapes in unique and out of the ordinary ways. An innovator and true master in photography\, Michael pioneered minimalist black and white images\, often captured on multi-hour-long exposures. All done on film\, his work could not be mistaken for anyone else’s. His mysterious photographs concentrate on the interaction between ephemeral atmospheric conditions of the natural landscape\, human-made structures\, and sculptural mass. Kenna is both a diurnal and nocturnal photographer\, fascinated by times of day when light is at its most pliant. \nHis masterfully crafted prints are always sold out\, his books are considered works of art\, and his exhibitions are in numerous galleries and permanent museums’ collections throughout the world. The National Gallery\, Washington\, D.C.; The Bibliotheque Nationale\, Paris; The Shanghai Art Museum; and The Victoria and Albert Museum\, London – are always sought after when displaying Kenna’s talent. PLACE is honored to host the occasion with Michael’s long-term collaborator and special guest Mark Silva. \nCocktails and Trees at PLACE\nWednesday\, May 3\n5:00-7:00pm\nPLACE\, 735 NW 18th Ave\, Portland \nRegister Now\nDine & Design proceeds benefit AFO programming\, including Architects in Schools and AFO scholarships. \nLearn more about Dine & Design.

SUMMARY:2022 Honored Citizen Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Every fall\, the Oregon architectural and building community comes together to celebrate the work and legacy of some of our most impactful contributors. This year\, AFO is excited to celebrate Lillian Pitt who has helped shape our state through her work as an artist\, mentor\, and advocate. Lillian was born on the Warm Springs Reservation and is of Warm Springs\, Wasco\, and Yakima descent. \nLillian’s art has been at the heart of numerous building projects across the state and around the world. Many structures around the Pacific Northwest have been elevated by Lillian’s work. With the Confluence project\, she designed the Welcome Gate for the Vancouver Land Bridge; her art also adorns Portland Tri-Met stations\, the Native American Student Center at Portland State University\, as well as sites in Sapporo\, Japan. \nTelling the story of her ancestors through her art – whether large-scale public art installations or smaller pieces of intricately designed jewelry – Lillian is an artist whose work is all around us. But her impact is not limited to the pieces she has produced. Lillian is a deeply committed mentor to numerous Indigenous artists from across the Pacific Northwest. By encouraging and cultivating the next generation of Native American artists\, Lillian is ensuring that the Indigenous story of Oregon is remembered and honored. \nArt is an essential part of our built environment. From public installations and sculptures to masks or jewelry\, Lillian works at every level of scale. We are inspired by her ethic to consider how we might make an impact at every scale and medium we work with. \nRegister Now\nView our sponsor packet or contact Susan Myers at susan@af-oregon.org for more information.
