How will they be inclusive of all people? How will people get around the city and what will people do for fun? Spend a week\, this July\, diving into the world of architecture and urban planning to Design Your Future City! \n  \nJoin us\, Monday\, July 20 – Friday\, July 24\, 2020\, for the Architects in Schools Summer Camp\, a free\, virtual\, self-paced camp\, recommended for youth ages 8-12. Register students by July 10th to participate. \n  \nBy the end of the week\, students will have a basic understanding of architecture\, urban planning\, the design process\, architectural styles\, why the design of cities should be inclusive of all people\, and more\, all while building critical thinking and problem solving skills. Plus\, they’ll have drawings and models to show for it! \n  \nThe camp is entirely virtual – meaning students participate from the comfort of their homes. It is also self-paced. We will email participants daily instructions to follow at their own time and pace. To engage in the camp\, participants will need a computer\, tablet\, or other device with access to the email address listed on your registration form. \n  \nWe will be mailing free art supplies and materials to participants who do not have access. We are accepting donations so we can send materials to families who don’t have access. Please consider giving to the Architecture Foundation of Oregon to supply all participants with materials and to help us offer free educational programs like this camp. Donate here. Thank you! \n  \nIf you have any questions about the camp\, please contact Architects in Schools Director\, Kim Knowles at kim@af-oregon.org. \n  \nRegistration is now closed. SUMMARY:2019 Honored Citizen Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Joachim Grube\nMonday\, October 14\, 2019\nOregon Convention Center\nPortland Ballroom\nno-host cocktails at 5:30pm\ndinner and program at 7pm \n  \nWe are thrilled to announce AFO’s 2019 Honored Citizen\, Joachim Grube\, who has contributed to the built environment in Oregon and around the world for decades. \n  \nOver his career as one of the leaders in the Oregon architecture community\, Joachim Grube has established himself as a true visionary who embraces innovative and purpose-driven design. You can find his influence in buildings across the state like Timberline Lodge\, where he guided the implementation of the new winter entrance\, and his collaborations with Pietro Belluschi on six churches including the University of Portland Chapel. Joachim’s legacy also includes creating successful partnerships between Portland architect/engineer teams and developing world professionals to design and deliver state-of-the-art facilities contributing to economic development around the world. \n  \nJoachim was born in the Free City of Danzig in 1932. At the end of World War II\, he and his family found themselves in a refugee camp with thousands of other displaced people. Following repatriation to West Germany and after completion of a bricklayer apprenticeship\, he graduated from the Hamburg School of Architecture. His first professional experience in Hamburg was followed by further study and an architectural internship in Berlin. \n  \nAfter marrying Liz\, a traveling student from Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, the couple decided to move to Oregon where Joachim worked at William Fletcher and SOM offices. In 1961 he was recruited by the UN to design Teacher Training Institutes across Africa as part of UNESCO’s Regional Planning Office in Khartoum\, Sudan. The four year assignment was an eye-opener for the couple and their two young children\, which compelled Joachim to focus his career on projects in developing countries. \n  \nUpon his return to Portland\, Joachim became a founding member of Yost Grube Hall Architecture\, a firm that for over 50 years has helped shape the built environment in Portland and left its mark in 45 countries overseas. But Joachim has also helped shape the lives of countless young professionals over the years. He is regarded as an artist\, a mentor and an advocate for new voices. By encouraging and supporting a diverse community of architects\, designers\, engineers and artists\, Joachim has served as a touchstone for an entire new generation of professionals.

SUMMARY:2019 Hatfield Scholars Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Join us and 150 other leaders in the designed and built industries to honor the history of the prestigious Senator Mark O. Hatfield Architectural Award and introduce this year’s awardees\, Mohamed Fahkry\, Portland State University and Zachary Sherrod\, University of Oregon. \nThis year\, we will hear from guest speaker\, Alice Wiewel\, the State Architect of the Oregon Department of Administrative Services Chief Financial Office. Her office develops policy for the State’s building portfolio\, particularly its focus on resilience\, stewardship\, design excellence and sustainability. \n  \nMohamed Fahkry & Zachary Sherrod\, 2019 Hatfield Scholars\nThe Awardees \nMohamed Fahkry\, 4th year undergraduate student at Portland State University\, aspires to create architecture that represents the communities he is rooted to and the communities that have shaped him\, including NE Portland and Senegal\, where he spent a majority of his childhood. He is passionate about finding “new and innovative approaches to build self-sustainable communities where members of all ages would be able to strive\, learn\, and grow to become productive\, engaged\, and successful members of society.” He is engaged in several volunteer organizations including the PSU Student Sustainability Center\, Oregon Food Bank\, Solve Oregon and Portland Adventist Community Services. \n  \nZachary Sherrod\, 4th year undergraduate student at University of Oregon\, is engaged and interested in affordable housing solutions\, specifically in rural Oregon communities like his hometown of La Grande. Through his Honors College thesis\, he is researching the politics of affordable housing in the Whiteaker neighborhood of Eugene where population growth has outpaced development. He aspires to serve those who need housing most through sustainable and affordable solutions. “Our pursuit of environmentalism and equity must proceed in tandem. If green architecture is to be universal\, then it must be affordable.” \n  \nThe luncheon raises funds for the annual monetary award while providing networking opportunities for current and past scholarship recipients and thought-provoking stories of how leaders in the built environment are contributing to the community. \n  \nEvent Sponsors: \n                         \n
