Ernesto’s own story reflects the potential that can be unleashed by investing in all our community members. Raised in a low income but loving family in central Mexico\, Ernesto watched his parents take advantage of educational opportunities and their own initiative to build careers in construction and nursing. They passed on their values of hard work and education to their children\, and Ernesto embraced those values to gain a foothold in this country by initially working in kitchens and restaurants as he pursued his educational goals\, culminating with a Ph.D. from Arizona State University in Environmental Design and Planning.   \nDuring his time in Phoenix\, he spearheaded initiatives to assess the health impacts of community development including gentrification\, access to public transportation\, and affordable housing\, and helped to create the Stardust Center for Affordable Homes & the Family.  \nPortland Mercado\, Scott Edwards Architecture & PLACE\nErnesto believes it is Hacienda’s job to help all families access the critical ingredients they need to achieve their goals: a stable\, affordable home\, a healthy family life that allows youth to learn and grow\, opportunities for economic success\, and access to affordable health care and healthy neighborhoods. He believes in the power of social enterprise to bring increased investment into breaking the cycle of poverty. He joined Hacienda because he shares the same values and experiences with this community and is eager to empower families to flourish like his own has.   \nErnesto is infused in impactful community work through his current board service with the Oregon Community Foundation and the iSector\, as well as past board service with the Prosperity Agenda\, the Energy Trust of Oregon\, Housing Oregon\, and more. He is also one of the Gubernatorial Appointees for Governor Tina Kotek’s Housing Production Advisory Council\, a council of experts charged with developing an action plan to meet ambitious housing construction goals. SUMMARY:2024 Honored Citizen\, Jon Schleuning
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Jon Schleuning\nJon Schleuning has been instrumental for nearly 50 years in raising public awareness of architecture and its impact on environments. Jon\, a proud native Oregonian\, has exhibited great leadership deeply rooted in the values of Portland and the Pacific Northwest. He received the 2014 Medal of Honor from the American Institute of Architects’ Northwest & Pacific Region and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His work spans professional\, civic\, and volunteer engagements that continue to impact the region in numerous ways. \nJon is most prominently associated with co-founding SRG Partnership\, Inc. His passionate\, high-energy direction has produced a team-based approach that consistently advances results combining design excellence with experience\, function\, performance\, and context. His many projects include the Oregon Coast Aquarium\, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute\, and the Mount St. Helens Visitor’s Center. Notably\, the Portland International Airport prior to the current renovations bears Jon’s transformational influence. Through his active leadership in the 1980’s\, PDX pioneered the Oregon Market concept\, featuring locally-made products at market prices. This daring new strategy very quickly attained unprecedented economic success\, making PDX a regional gateway and model for other airports nationwide. \nCivically\, Jon has challenged tradition to integrate solutions that elevate the human spirit\, catalyze communities\, and reduce our carbon footprint for individual structures and district-wide scales. His innovative mark is evident in the design and evolution of the Portland Downtown Plan\, which he accomplished through a mayoral appointed position. He served on numerous committees and review boards\, and advised leaders on projects that led to Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Arts District\, including the Portland Art Museum\, Oregon Historical Society\, and Portland’5 Center for the Arts. His voice ensured design and architectural expertise were present in these specific civic initiatives. \nIn addition to these accomplishments\, Jon dedicated his leadership to design and civic focused organizations\, including the AIA\, the City Club of Portland\, and as a founding member of the Architecture Foundation of Oregon. We are proud to have the opportunity to honor such an impactful member of our community. \n2024 Honored Citizen\nSustaining Sponsorship by University of Oregon College of Design \nTuesday\, October 10\n5pm Reception  |  6:30pm Dinner\nOregon Convention Center\nPortland Ballroom \nRegister Now\nVolunteer at the event in exchange for free admission! SUMMARY:Dine & Design: A Toast to Brooks Gunsul
DESCRIPTION:Toast the impact of Oregon Architect and AFO co-founder Brooks Gunsul.\nBrooks has touched the personal and professional lives of many renowned architects today\, and AFO is pleased to celebrate his impact this summer. Chat with Brooks and friends at ZGF’s newly-renovated office and deck over tasty treats and cool beverages. Raise a glass in honor of Brooks’ leadership and vision! \n“Brooks’ ability to compliment a good design concept with an innovative technical design interpretation down to the smallest detail was remarkable\, and in no small measure was responsible for many of the design accolades ZGF was awarded. Many architects who were part of the ZGF family over the years\, myself included\, benefited from his knowledge and guidance.”\n– Ron Gronowski\, former ZGF Principal \nAbout Brooks\nWhen Brooks Gunsul learned of Norm Zimmer’s aspirations to transform Wolff and Zimmer into a modern architecture practice\, he decided to spend a Saturday morning working with Zimmer and was sold. He joined the firm in 1959 and became a partner\, along with Bob Frasca\, in 1966. Soon renamed the Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership\, Gunsul took the helm of Technical Design\, translating concepts and executing design detailing and documentation. \nA graduate of Washington State University\, he nurtured ZGF’s early relationship with Kaiser Permanente to design hospitals in Los Angeles\, Oakland\, and Hawaii\, then Portland. His hand is seen in many of ZGF’s most foundational projects\, including the Justice Center\, KOIN Tower\, Oregon Convention Center\, and Banfield Light Rail stations. His portfolio also includes Portland International Airport Terminal Expansions\, Bellevue Library\, California Science Center\, and the National Institutes of Health Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center\, to name a few. Gunsul began his transition of leadership to ZGF’s Technical Design in 1989\, until he fully retired in 2000. He was a founding member of the Architecture Foundation of Oregon and has supported the organization through philanthropic giving\, including leaving a substantial gift to AFO’s endowment with a match challenge for others to do the same. \nA Toast to Brooks Gunsul\nWednesday\, July 24\n5:30-7:30pm\nZGF Architects\, Portland \nRegister Now\nAFO Members – $75\nNon-AFO Members – $85\nStudent & Emerging Professionals – $30 \nOur summer Dine & Design event series is a fundraiser benefitting AFO programming\, including Architects in Schools and AFO scholarships. SUMMARY:REFRESH @ The Portland Building
DESCRIPTION:Re-engage with friends and colleagues and tour the newly completed Portland Building.  \nBeer\, wine\, and light appetizers \nREFRESH is an annual mixer and jovial networking opportunity for design and building professionals\, especially younger individuals working to advance their career prospects\, to enhance connections across the industry. Held at a different and architecturally exciting location each summer\, the event brings together over 100 guests to learn about a stunning newly renovated\, reimagined\, or brand new project. Guests will learn more about what makes the project special from the designers and builders and mingle at AFO’s second largest annual event of the year. \nThe iconic Portland Building\, originally designed by renowned architect Michael Graves\, accommodates approximately 1\,400 workers primarily with city bureaus and Multnomah County offices. For the recent renovation\, the City chose progressive design-build as the best delivery model for a collaborative team approach to the reconstruction project\, featuring a core team including DLR Group\, Balfour Beatty\, and the City of Portland. \nThe building first opened as City offices in 1982 and incorporated several design features that didn’t adapt over the building’s 40-year life span. The reconstruction restored some of the original design vision\, while adapting a new vision for the city. A unitized curtain wall recreates the original colors and shapes of Michael Graves’ design intent while solving for many of the building’s technical performance issues\, from moisture to daylight. \nJoin us to experience this building which was recognized by the Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies with a 2021 American Architectural Award. \nAll funds raised by this event go toward supporting AFO\, which includes programs such as Architects in Schools and multiple scholarship opportunities. \nRegister\nREFRESH @ The Portland Building\nWednesday\, August 2\, 5-7pm\nPortland Building\n1120 SW 5th Ave\, Portland\, 97204 \nBecome a Sponsor

SUMMARY:Cocktails & Trees Exhibit at PLACE
DESCRIPTION:Blackstone Hill Tree\, Hokkaido\, Japan. 2020 © Michael Kenna\nArt Installation and Cocktail Party \nJoin us for an exclusive U.S. exhibition of Michael Kenna’s Trees and enjoy cocktails at PLACE. \nFor over fifty years\, Michael Kenna has been looking at landscapes in unique and out of the ordinary ways. An innovator and true master in photography\, Michael pioneered minimalist black and white images\, often captured on multi-hour-long exposures. All done on film\, his work could not be mistaken for anyone else’s. His mysterious photographs concentrate on the interaction between ephemeral atmospheric conditions of the natural landscape\, human-made structures\, and sculptural mass. Kenna is both a diurnal and nocturnal photographer\, fascinated by times of day when light is at its most pliant. \nHis masterfully crafted prints are always sold out\, his books are considered works of art\, and his exhibitions are in numerous galleries and permanent museums’ collections throughout the world. The National Gallery\, Washington\, D.C.; The Bibliotheque Nationale\, Paris; The Shanghai Art Museum; and The Victoria and Albert Museum\, London – are always sought after when displaying Kenna’s talent. PLACE is honored to host the occasion with Michael’s long-term collaborator and special guest Mark Silva. \nCocktails and Trees at PLACE\nWednesday\, May 3\n5:00-7:00pm\nPLACE\, 735 NW 18th Ave\, Portland \nRegister Now\nDine & Design proceeds benefit AFO programming\, including Architects in Schools and AFO scholarships. \nLearn more about Dine & Design.
