SUMMARY:2024 Honored Citizen\, Jon Schleuning
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Jon Schleuning\nJon Schleuning has been instrumental for nearly 50 years in raising public awareness of architecture and its impact on environments. Jon\, a proud native Oregonian\, has exhibited great leadership deeply rooted in the values of Portland and the Pacific Northwest. He received the 2014 Medal of Honor from the American Institute of Architects’ Northwest & Pacific Region and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His work spans professional\, civic\, and volunteer engagements that continue to impact the region in numerous ways. \nJon is most prominently associated with co-founding SRG Partnership\, Inc. His passionate\, high-energy direction has produced a team-based approach that consistently advances results combining design excellence with experience\, function\, performance\, and context. His many projects include the Oregon Coast Aquarium\, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute\, and the Mount St. Helens Visitor’s Center. Notably\, the Portland International Airport prior to the current renovations bears Jon’s transformational influence. Through his active leadership in the 1980’s\, PDX pioneered the Oregon Market concept\, featuring locally-made products at market prices. This daring new strategy very quickly attained unprecedented economic success\, making PDX a regional gateway and model for other airports nationwide. \nCivically\, Jon has challenged tradition to integrate solutions that elevate the human spirit\, catalyze communities\, and reduce our carbon footprint for individual structures and district-wide scales. His innovative mark is evident in the design and evolution of the Portland Downtown Plan\, which he accomplished through a mayoral appointed position. He served on numerous committees and review boards\, and advised leaders on projects that led to Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Arts District\, including the Portland Art Museum\, Oregon Historical Society\, and Portland’5 Center for the Arts. His voice ensured design and architectural expertise were present in these specific civic initiatives. \nIn addition to these accomplishments\, Jon dedicated his leadership to design and civic focused organizations\, including the AIA\, the City Club of Portland\, and as a founding member of the Architecture Foundation of Oregon. We are proud to have the opportunity to honor such an impactful member of our community. \n2024 Honored Citizen\nSustaining Sponsorship by University of Oregon College of Design \nTuesday\, October 10\n5pm Reception  |  6:30pm Dinner\nOregon Convention Center\nPortland Ballroom \nRegister Now\nVolunteer at the event in exchange for free admission! SUMMARY:2022 Honored Citizen Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Every fall\, the Oregon architectural and building community comes together to celebrate the work and legacy of some of our most impactful contributors. This year\, AFO is excited to celebrate Lillian Pitt who has helped shape our state through her work as an artist\, mentor\, and advocate. Lillian was born on the Warm Springs Reservation and is of Warm Springs\, Wasco\, and Yakima descent. \nLillian’s art has been at the heart of numerous building projects across the state and around the world. Many structures around the Pacific Northwest have been elevated by Lillian’s work. With the Confluence project\, she designed the Welcome Gate for the Vancouver Land Bridge; her art also adorns Portland Tri-Met stations\, the Native American Student Center at Portland State University\, as well as sites in Sapporo\, Japan. \nTelling the story of her ancestors through her art – whether large-scale public art installations or smaller pieces of intricately designed jewelry – Lillian is an artist whose work is all around us. But her impact is not limited to the pieces she has produced. Lillian is a deeply committed mentor to numerous Indigenous artists from across the Pacific Northwest. By encouraging and cultivating the next generation of Native American artists\, Lillian is ensuring that the Indigenous story of Oregon is remembered and honored. \nArt is an essential part of our built environment. From public installations and sculptures to masks or jewelry\, Lillian works at every level of scale. We are inspired by her ethic to consider how we might make an impact at every scale and medium we work with. \nRegister Now\nView our sponsor packet or contact Susan Myers at susan@af-oregon.org for more information.

SUMMARY:2019 Honored Citizen Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Joachim Grube\nMonday\, October 14\, 2019\nOregon Convention Center\nPortland Ballroom\nno-host cocktails at 5:30pm\ndinner and program at 7pm \n  \nWe are thrilled to announce AFO’s 2019 Honored Citizen\, Joachim Grube\, who has contributed to the built environment in Oregon and around the world for decades. \n  \nOver his career as one of the leaders in the Oregon architecture community\, Joachim Grube has established himself as a true visionary who embraces innovative and purpose-driven design. You can find his influence in buildings across the state like Timberline Lodge\, where he guided the implementation of the new winter entrance\, and his collaborations with Pietro Belluschi on six churches including the University of Portland Chapel. Joachim’s legacy also includes creating successful partnerships between Portland architect/engineer teams and developing world professionals to design and deliver state-of-the-art facilities contributing to economic development around the world. \n  \nJoachim was born in the Free City of Danzig in 1932. At the end of World War II\, he and his family found themselves in a refugee camp with thousands of other displaced people. Following repatriation to West Germany and after completion of a bricklayer apprenticeship\, he graduated from the Hamburg School of Architecture. His first professional experience in Hamburg was followed by further study and an architectural internship in Berlin. \n  \nAfter marrying Liz\, a traveling student from Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, the couple decided to move to Oregon where Joachim worked at William Fletcher and SOM offices. In 1961 he was recruited by the UN to design Teacher Training Institutes across Africa as part of UNESCO’s Regional Planning Office in Khartoum\, Sudan. The four year assignment was an eye-opener for the couple and their two young children\, which compelled Joachim to focus his career on projects in developing countries. \n  \nUpon his return to Portland\, Joachim became a founding member of Yost Grube Hall Architecture\, a firm that for over 50 years has helped shape the built environment in Portland and left its mark in 45 countries overseas. But Joachim has also helped shape the lives of countless young professionals over the years. He is regarded as an artist\, a mentor and an advocate for new voices. By encouraging and supporting a diverse community of architects\, designers\, engineers and artists\, Joachim has served as a touchstone for an entire new generation of professionals.
