SUMMARY:Fellowship Celebration
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a special gathering celebrating our 2025 and 2026 Van Evera Bailey and Pat Sanchez Women’s Fellows! \nOur 2025 VEB Fellow Rand Pinson will present his year-long exploration and findings during his fellowship. Rand explored ways to elevate the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail into a cohesive and impactful national park experience. Inspired by successful precedents Rand conducted comparative research and field studies in Norway and along the Trail to identify strategies to enhance the Trail’s accessibility\, cultural integration\, and ecological stewardship. \nYou will also have a chance to meet our 2026 Fellows. Van Evera Bailey Fellow Emi Day will realize Bridging Portland\, a citywide dinner series that reimagines Portland’s bridges as cherished public venues—temporary festival streets where people gather\, eat\, create\, and celebrate together. Pat Sanchez Fellow Heather McGinn-Girón will participate in the Portland Metro Chamber’s 2026 Best Practices Trip to Vancouver\, B.C.\, where she will travel alongside Portland’s civic and business leaders to study the city’s integrated approach to housing affordability. \nLearn more about AFO Fellowships. \nRegister Now\nThursday\, February 5\n5:00-7:00pm\nPAE\, 151 SW 1st Ave\, Portland\, OR 97204 \nFree to attendFill out my LGL Form!

SUMMARY:In Pursuit of an Equitable Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Firms are striving for equity and inclusion in the workplace for many reasons: to ensure a sense of belonging for their employees\, to attract talent that expands the firm’s offerings\, and to compete in a marketplace that demands inclusivity. What certifications or frameworks should leadership pursue? How does accountability factor in months or years after goals have been set? Is tracking and reporting cumbersome to the work? \nAFO’s panel of experienced leaders will discuss the implications for architecture firms exploring these questions. We will specifically focus on JUST\, B-Corp\, and the NOMA PDX Call to Action\, including stories of realities versus expectations\, challenges and benefits\, and key learnings. \nHosted at PAE’s Living Building\, this discussion is not to be missed! \nPanelists:\n\nRebecca Goldcrump (she/her)\, CEO\, The Impact Collective\nLisa Sato (she/her) OAA\, NOMA\, Project Designer\, Carleton Hart Architecture\nAbby Dacey (she/her) AIA\, LEED AP BD+C\, Principal\, Mahlum Architects\nModerated by Hannah Silver (she/her) WELL AP\, LEED AP Homes\, EcoDistricts AP\, Fitwel Ambassador\, Inclusive Design Facilitator\, Holst Architecture\n\nRegister\nIn Pursuit of an Equitable Workplace\nTuesday\, April 30\, 5:30-7:00pm\nPAE Living Building\n151 SW 1st Ave\, Portland\, 97204 \nThis event is free to AFO members including current Architects in Schools volunteers. SUMMARY:PAE Living Building Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join AFO in kicking off our first Community Event of 2022!  This event will include a guided tour of the PAE Living Building and mingling with light snacks/refreshments. Anyone interested in design\, engineering\, and sustainability in the built environment will enjoy learning more about this incredible achievement. \nThe Living Building Challenge is a certification program that goes beyond sustainability or emission reduction and envisions a regenerative built environment that functions in the same way as a living organism. \nThe PAE Living Building is the world’s first developer-driven Living Building.  It demonstrates replicable and cost-effective solutions to our planet’s energy and resource challenges\, such as a closed-loop water system with on-site collection and treatment\, efficient photovoltaic-battery storage systems\, and urinal-to-fertilizer systems. \nRegister Now to Save Your Spot \n \nCOVID: We will follow the state/local/federal guidelines on masking. Due to federal policy\, all participants who enter the building must be fully vaccinated. We appreciate your cooperation and welcome any questions. \nAccessibility: There are ADA-accessible restrooms on every floor. All  restrooms are gender-neutral and individual. There are no stairs to enter the building and the elevator is accessible in the main lobby. \nThe building is within 5 minutes walking distance of MAX and bus stops. For parking\, street parking and surface lots are available around the building. All the sidewalks have ramps. \nWe strive to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals\, including individuals with disabilities\, to engage fully. Please describe any accessibility concerns or questions in your registration form.
