Frasca Event: Creating a Cultural Commons

July 28 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The opening of the Rothko Pavilion marks a transformative new chapter for the Portland Art Museum, significantly elevating Portland’s cultural landscape. Join us for a conversation exploring the architecture and design of the Pavilion and the architectural history of PAM that brought us here.

This discussion will examine the schematic concept, use of materials, interactive relationships, and urban presence on the Park Blocks and within the city. We will consider how contemporary museum design can shape public life and open cultural gateways. Panelists will address the relationship of architecture, art, and civic identity; illustrating how the new addition creates dialogue between historic and contemporary spaces across the Museum campus.

Join AFO and the Oregon Historical Society for a conversation centered on design, placemaking, and the outlook for cultural institutions, inspired by one of Portland’s most noteworthy recent architectural projects.

Speakers

  • Andrew Smith, AIA, Hennebery Eddy Architects
  • Tim Eddy, FAIA, Hennebery Eddy Architects

These collaborative events bring people together to experience and discuss the intersection of community and architecture by exploring a range of subjects, featuring influential design projects, highlighting local nonprofits and community organizations, and touching on the architectural challenges that face Oregon and beyond.
