Architects in Schools Summer Camp

July 26 - July 30

Join us July 26-30, 2021 for our second annual Architects in Schools Summer Camp! During this camp, students will explore the world of architecture and learn how to design a building for people with different needs. The virtual camp is free and recommended for youth ages 8-12. Register by 5pm PST on July 12 to participate.

This year’s camp theme is They All Saw a Building: Designing for Everyone’s Needs. The camp will center on equity focused architecture and challenge students to think about how people of different backgrounds, abilities and cultures may experience the same space in different ways. Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing, planning and model making, while exploring the social and cultural implications that architecture has on the world – because architecture impacts everybody! They will apply this knowledge to their own design of a building that puts the needs of their client first.

The camp is entirely virtual – meaning students can participate from home. To engage in the camp, participants will need a computer, tablet, or other device with access to internet. Everyday, we will email you the digital lesson including hands-on activities, reading, thinking exercises, and pre-recorded videos. There will also be a live Zoom session everyday from 12:30-1:30pm PST. The live sessions are optional, but we do recommend students try to join as many as possible to fully experience the camp content.

We will mail free art supplies to participants who are experiencing financial barriers. Please specify on your registration form if you need supplies sent to you. The art supplies and materials that participants will need throughout the camp include paper, pencils, coloring tools (i.e. colored pencils, markers or crayons), scissors, glue or tape, a brown paper grocery bag and recycled materials (i.e. cardboard, toilet paper rolls, cereal boxes, shoe boxes, plastic bottles, etc.).

Participation in the camp is free. We are accepting donations so we can send camp materials to families who have barriers to accessing them. This will allow all children to participate regardless of need. Please consider giving to the Architecture Foundation of Oregon to supply all participants with materials and to help us offer free educational programs like this camp. Donate here. Thank you!

If you have any questions about the camp, please contact Architects in Schools Director, Kim Knowles at kim@af-oregon.org.
