Art & Cocktails with Motoi Yamamoto’s Staying In Time
September 8, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Art Installation and Cocktail Party
Celebrating PLACE’s 10+ Year Anniversary
PLACE invites you to a unique Japanese-inspired experience with food and music to celebrate artist-in-residence Motoi Yamamoto’s Staying In Time installation.
Motoi Yamamoto and PLACE engaged Oregon-based Jacobsen Salt to explore life, love, death, and memories and how they relate to society especially as we reflect on the pandemic. Items full of memories, cherished by the deceased…what do we lose when we let go of such things? Can we separate the memories from the items and tuck them away in our hearts? Salt has always been deeply linked to people’s lives in the East and West and in Japan, it is an indispensable substance for customs such as funerals. Motoi started using salt because it represents purification and cleansing. This smooth and gentle crystal enveloped his heart in an embrace as it was wracked with feelings of loss.
Motoi’s work has appeared at the MoMA P.S.1 Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Hermitage State Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Hakone Open-Air Museum, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa, Setouchi Triennale and more wonderful communities worldwide.
